Meet the Director

Tom O'Neill, Camp Director

"What brings me back to Golden Slipper Camp each summer is the kids and the spirit," said Tom O'Neill, Camp Director of Golden Slipper Camp. "Kids from all different backgrounds come together for four weeks, and we become a family."

With over 2 decades of experience at Golden Slipper Camp, plus 12 more at other camps, Tom's enthusiasm for camp and the incredible experiences kids have each summer drives him professionally. Off-season, Tom teaches Multiple Disabilities Support students at Frankford High School in the Philadelphia School District. He's taught special education students since 1975 and been involved with summer camp just as long.

"I've dedicated my life to working with children of all ages, races, religions, and abilities," he said.

He began a career in camping as a counselor with the Variety Club Camp for Physically Disabled, eventually becoming Head Counselor and, for six years, Assistant Director. In this latter role, his experience with the administrative and management side of camp began to flourish, leading to his role since 1989 as Assistant Director at Golden Slipper Camp and Camp Director in 2006.

"The kids and counselors love Tom," said Paul Geller, Executive Director of Golden Slipper Club & Charities, of which Golden Slipper Camp is an affiliate agency. "We welcome him in this expanded role."

Tom earned a bachelor's of science degree in elementary and special education at Lock Haven University and a master's in education from Temple University.

An interesting fact about Tom? He's raised his three children at Golden Slipper Camp. In fact, ask to meet his son, Tom O'Neill Jr., who continues to return to Golden Slipper with his dad to serve as a counselor.
