It's an extremely demanding job, but it's a rewarding one, too. In one sentence, your job is to do nearly whatever it takes to show campers the best summer of their lives.
Most of our staff members are former campers and grew up at Golden Slipper Camp. Many stay on through their university years, returning each summer to become experienced and valuable staff members.
At Golden Slipper Camp, we value our staff and the role each individual plays in our success. And it shows. The number one comment we hear most often from parents is, "Your staff really care about their campers." It's true. It's what makes our camp unique and why we have such a profound impact on kids.
Why Your Job as Counselor is Such a Special Opportunity
Every position at Golden Slipper Camp has a specific job profile, but the basic job is the cabin counselor. As a counselor, you are the supervisor - really like the big sister or brother - of a small group (8 - 10) of campers. Typically, you live with the kids, accompany them to most activities, supervise them at meals, and generally look out for their well being.
You touch their lives, and in a way, a bit of you rubs off on each of them. You are the person they will remember most from their summer at Golden Slipper Camp. You are the role model for these impressionable young people - motivating them, keeping harmony among them, teaching them new skills, humoring them, and helping them build self-esteem and self-confidence.
Unlike a conventional 9-to-5 job, you will not only work alongside other staff, but you will get to know them, enjoy the kids and the activities with them, laugh with them, and share good times with them in ways that few other opportunities in life allow.
Besides the immense gratification of working with children, you will also gain self-confidence. You will become more resourceful and build leadership, program, communication, and general people skills. You will create bonds with campers and staff that will stay with you for your entire life. Over the years, many of our staff have forged their greatest lifelong friendships with fellow staff members. In fact, many of them now send their children to Golden Slipper Camp, to give them the same magical experiences they remember.
It's not easy, nor is it all fun and games. It requires a great deal of stamina, enthusiasm, and interpersonal skills. Staff members must be receptive to the campers and take very seriously the responsibility of nurturing these children in a safe and interactive environment. The number one priority is always on the children
Our five-day staff training session will equip each staff member with the skills, understanding, and tools they need to positively impact each and every child at camp. You will be personally challenged, experience growth, and develop in ways that will ultimately help you become a better leader in our world.
